Return to AD&D Central
The Magic Encyclopedia Volume One
This Magic Encyclopedia has a seeming unrelated 5-page section, a complete TSR product list... EVERYTHING, not just AD&D. TSR's Lazer Tag game, Marvel Super Heroes, calendars, Boot Hill, you name it, everything published by TSR through 1992 is in the list.
The list is organized by organized by TSR product code, the 4-digit code unless the product had a alphanumeric code assigned. So the Conan RPG is found under its code of 7014 and Slave Pits of the Undercity is found under its code of A1.
I used this list back when I was first creating this website in 2003, when there was very little information available online regarding some of TSR's more esoteric product lines.
"All AD&D game campaigns have one thing in common - treasure. Of course, some campaigns have more treasure than others, but it is the lure of treasure that entices intrepid adventurers of any world away from the warmth and safety of home and hearth and sets them plunging into labyrinthine depths or into the uncharted wilderness to face fearsome beasts.
To an adventurer, the most prized treasure of all is magic. Open this book and you will find a concise listing of every enchanted item ever invented for TSR, Inc.'s fantasy role playing games. The list in Volume One runs from Abacus to Goblet. The listing includes an experience point value and a gold piece sale value for each item. At last, you'll know exactly what every bauble in any hoard is really worth. No need to keep guessing. The listing also identifies the product where the item is described and the page number where you can find it. A complete list of those products (current through December, 1992) is also provided.
Ever wonder what a phylactery is? Do you know what a diadem looks like or how a chaplet is worn? Don't wonder anymore! This book also contains an illustrated description of each kind of item."

The Magic Encyclopedia Volume Two
"Did you ever wonder what a phylactery is? Do you know what the difference between a cloak and a robe is? The Magic Encyclopedia answers these questions with succinct definitions of every type of item found in a magical treasure hoard, and every definition has an illustration.
The list of definitions in Volume Two runs from Goggle to Zwieback, and completes the list begun in Volume One. The listing includes an experience point value and a gold piece sale value for each item. At last, you'll know exactly what every bauble in any hoard is really worth. The listing also identifies the product where the item is described and the page number where you can find it. A complete list of those products (current through December, 1991) is also provided."

At the introduction of AD&D 2nd Edition in 1989, TSR took the radical step of not selling a hardcover monster manual. This had always been a part of AD&D's holy trinity of PHB, DMG, and MM.
Instead they sold a three ring binder - the Monstrous Compendium - to be supported by years of expansion sheet releases.
The reality was that a monster manual would be inevitably joined by a monster manual 2 and 3. Monsters would be scattered throughout many modules and accessories over the years. A binder was a strategy to cure this problem.
Three hole punched sheets were sold in the packs of the MC-series and added to iconic AD&D box sets until 1993-4.
In the end, TSR went back to a hardcover: The Monstrous Manual.

Monstrous Compendium Volume One (MC1)
"What's a fantasy role-playing game without monsters? At the heart of any good AD&D adventure, you'll find great monsters - dragons, giants, trolls, killer oozes, shadows, and who knows what else! This first Monstrous Compendium gives DMs and players 144 5-hole punched pages of new and improved monsters, with all-new illustrations, expanded descriptions, and complete statistical data, all in an easy-to-read, easy to reference format. Players can organize the monsters in this pack, alphabetically, according to when they show up in an adventure, according to monster type, or any other way they see fit. And the binder is large enough to hold additional monster sheets from Monstrous Compenium Volumes Two and Three!"

Dragonlance Monstrous Compendium Appendix [aka Monstrous Compendium Volume Two BINDER]
This binder with Dragonlance sheets has two cover graphics:
* "Monstrous Compendium, Volume Two" binder
* "Monstrous Compendium: Dragonlance Appendix"
I'm not clear which came first, released together, or what. The unfortunate naming of course confuses this with Monstrous Compendium, Volume Two sheets (MC2).
"This volume of the exciting Monstrous Compendium series brings you the unique creatures of Krynn: astral dragons, Krynn minotaurs, the various races and tribes of dwarves and elves, knights of Solamnia, kender, and dozens of other creatures and monsters from both Ansalon and the new continent of Taladas. Ninety-six pages in all, plus four full-color dividers with identification tabs. The three-ring binder holds these monsters, and has room for the monster sheets from two more Monstrous Compendium expansions."

Monstrous Compendium Appendix
"There's lots of bashers that can plant you pretty fast, out here in the planes. And that's the only "pretty" thing about most of 'em. A blood's got to know what's what, or the results won't rise. A lot of creatures out here're just plain bad, and even the good ones can burn you if you rattle your bonebox wrong. What a cutter needs is a guide to what's out there, and if it's twice as big as the previous guide and illustrated in color, that's just a bonus. Sure, there's been other guides to planar creatures, but most're hard to find, don't scan the turf, or just don't have the straight chant....
This MONSTROUS COMPENDIUM appendix includes a broad spectrum of monsters from the Inner, Outer, Astral, and Ethereal Planes - all geared to provide hours of adventure in the PLANESCAPE campaign setting. Replacing the original Outer Planes Appendix, this new and enlarged compendium includes full-color illustrations, reintroducing many of the best mulitplanar monsters from a wide variety of out-of-print sources."

Monstrous Compendium Appendix III: Creatures of Darkness
"Inside this book are dozens of sinister beings waiting to strike terror into the hearts of role-players everywhere. From the dreaded scarab beetles of Har'Akir to the archer skeletons of Darkon and the drow vampires of Arak, these Creatures of Darkness will provide hours of diabolical adventure. But be warned - if you buy this accessory, your AD&D game players may never forgive you."

Monstrous Compendium Annual, Vol. 1
"They're ba-ack! Virtually all of the monsters that appeared in TSR's 1993 AD&D® product line, plus many of those that appeared in the '93 issues of Dragon®, Dungeon®, and Polyhedron® Magazines, are brought together in this first release in an annual series of Monstrous Compendium supplements.
This book is crawling with more than 100 denizens of the land, sky, sea, and underdark, waiting to creep into the nearest adventure. Creatures within these pages have appeared in the Forgotten Realms® campaign setting, the Al-Qadim® world of adventure, the Ravenloft® world of horror, the Dark Sun® game world, and even the Outer and Inner Planes, but they've all been reorganized, updated, and edited so they can be used in any campaign. An introduction explaining how to breathe life into random encounters is included too.
Every illustration is brand new and presented in full color, so these monsters are more lifelike than ever before! This is a must-have item for all serious Dungeon Masters."
1994 ... TSR 2145 ... ISBN 156076838X
Monstrous Compendium Annual, Vol. 2
"Back again, and better than ever! Virtually all the new AD&D® game monsters that were published by TSR in 1994 have growled, burrowed, and slithered their way into this second release in a yearly series of MONSTROUS COMPENDIUM® supplements.
More than 100 denizens of the land, sky, sea, and ... other places ... are collected inside. Most of these creatures originally appeared in a specific AD&D campaign setting, but they've all been updated and edited so they can be used in any campaign.
This year's collection also features the return of the long out-of-print dinosaurs and pleistocene creatures, and includes general encounter tables for the MONSTROUS COMPENDIUM® books.
This richly illustrated book is an essential addition to every Dungeon Master's library."

Monstrous Compendium Appendix II
"Don't matter if you're a blood's blood or a leatherhead with a lot to learn - this book's for you. The planes are full of critters that'd just as soon kill a berk as look at him, and plenty more that like to rattle their bone-boxes for nothing more than the sheer pleasure of it. What a cutter needs is a book like this one - something that tells the real dark of what's waiting out there, just on the other side of that portal.
This MONSTROUS COMPENDIUM appendix contains nearly 100 new monsters from the Outlands and various Outer Planes, and a few updated creatures that haven't seen print for quite some time. The aasimar, a new player character race, awaits your discovery - along with eladrins, hollyphants, rilmani, new tanar'ri, and more!"

Monstrous Compendium Appendix II: Terrors Beyond Tyr
"The sky rumble with impending rain... droplets hiss in the blasted air before reaching the parched ground. A leviathan bursts through the clouds, its silver scales glinting in the crimson sun. The rain drake passes, then moves in with jaws wide open....
Only the bravest -- or the most foolhardy -- would dare stand before the creatures included inside this MONSTROUS COMPENDIUM appendix. Encounter the shadow giant, the stalking horror, and the unique undead found lurking beyond the Tablelands as well as many other terrors. Containing 128 pages of full-color monsters, this accessory is designed for the DARK SUN campaign world but is adaptable to any AD&D campaign."

Monstrous Compendium Appendices I & II
"They are the foul and horrible creatures that dwell in Ravenloft, the Demiplane of Dread, and they are waiting for you. From the dream-stalking bastellus to the body-snatching doppleganger plant, this horrific tome contains a great assortment of creatures that will haunt the nightmares of player characters for years to come. In addition, this book presents over 20 unique creatures, including the living brain of Rudolph Von Aubrecker and the dreaded night hag Styrx, all of whom are perfect for use as master villains and NPCs.
TSR is proud to present this compilation of diabolical beings from the first two MONSTROUS COMPENDIUM appendices dedicated to the RAVENLOFT campaign setting. First released in 1991 and 1993, these collections have been unavailable for some time, but always in demand. Now they're back - at a price that's lower than the combined price of the two earlier products. No RAVENLOFT campaign is complete without this book."

"Things are different on the Inner Planes. Oh, some bashers might say they're deadlier, or harsher, or just plain weirder, but this truth is, they're merely different. And on planes full of nothing but searing magmas, swampy ooze, glittering mineral, utter desolation, or life incarnate, is it any wonder that a body'd find creatures as alien as any the multiverse has ever seen? Things that eat color, leaving a victim fully transparent. Beasts that spread life like a virus, animating all things around them. Spirits that form bodies by forcing hundreds of smaller animals to act as one. It's enough to make a sod long for a pit fiend.
Liven up any PLANESCAPE or AD&D campaign with the MOSNTROUS COMPENDIUM Appendix III, which features 128 pages of monsters that lurk on the Inner Planes, the Astral Plane, and the Ethereal Plane - some of the strangest and most inhospitable environments in the multiverse. Most of the critters are brand new, though a few old favorites have been updated. This book also provides a detailed look at the ecology of the planes in question, not to mention an appendix of inner-planar creatures that're more like animals than monsters. And, of course, all-new illustrations vividly bring each of these exotic beings to life."
